Reading to the Dogs

Last Thursday, I traveled bright and early to P.S. 96 in East Harlem to take photos of a reading program where children read to dogs. The program is designed to help children learn to read to an audience. The children take their time, annunciate all of the words, and the dogs (in their splendidly canine way) are a patient and attentive audience. The program is clearly something because the kids read very well, and they absolutely love to have the dogs around. For more about these reading programs, and a slew of other dog wonders, check out Every Dog Has a Gift by Rachel McPherson (founder of the Good Dog Foundation), publishing in March 2010 from Tarcher/Penguin. And keep an eye out for a couple of these photos in there. (First time my photos are being published in a book. If you'd like to do me a favor, you could purchase a copy.)

This is Max, a 3-year old Goldendoodle. Clearly, Max is a hero.
